This new SSD as an external boot drive is way more complex than I expected. I renamed the internal disk and gave the startup SSD the identical name to the old internal startup disk. Despite that, Many, many apps happily retain their connection to the internal disk, despite its changed name. And so far I have not discovered how to do a complete erase of the internal disk.
