This is not the place for a full discussion of universal basic income. The way I see it, heavily influenced by a few things I have read, is that it offers people a permanent social net. Enough to live healthily, but not enough to have a whole lot of fun. If people want to earn more, they get a job. That does not deprive them of the UBI. If they want to study the harpsichord or ancient cuneiform, they do so. If they want to contribute to local society, they do so. It provides a base from which to do what inspires you.
