@nitinkhanna I am not a historian, but I do think Tolstoy was trying to undermine the myth of Napoleon as a genius. I suspect the minute doings of unknown individuals are underrated, especially by non historians. But powerful people often have some influence. I also think inanimate forces have a huge influence, like weather and disease.
