So, I'm faced with the prospect of replacing a dead hard drive. I see people talking about their NAS, and wonder whether this is a good route for me. But searching for articles online about the pros and cons of such a set-up aren't really helping me.

I currently have a 2T drive that is used exclusively for Time Machine backups and is about half full. And a dying 500G drive that contains a lot of less-used stuff. And a couple more 500G drives that are not usually connected and that store bits and pieces that are very seldom needed.

Would it be worth getting myself, say, a 2-bay NAS (Synology, probably) and sticking a couple of 2T (or 4T if I can get a good price) drives in it?

I'm really the only person who would use it, though I guess I could set The Main Squeeze's machine to use it for Time Machine.

Or maybe I should just get myself an independent 4T and be done with it, leaving the 2T for my Time Machine.

Thanks.
