Why would it ultimately be stupid? If you thought you had something to gain, you would set your principles aside and participate. FWIW, I use it a bit for the usal reasons -- keeping in touch and a bit of self-promotion. And I know my eyeballs are being sold. It just doesn't bother me that much, partly because I am extremely unlikely to respond to the people who've paid for access to me.
