So, I'm faced with the prospect of replacing a dead hard drive. I see people talking about their NAS, and wonder whether this is a good route for me. But searching for articles online about the pros and cons of such a set-up aren't really helping me.

I currently have a 2T drive that is used exclusively for Time Machine backups and is about half full. And a dying 500G drive that contains a lot of less-used stuff. And a couple more 500G drives that are not usually connected and that store bits and pieces that are very seldom needed.

Would it be worth getting myself, say, a 2-bay NAS (Synology, probably) and sticking a couple of 2T (or 4T if I can get a good price) drives in it?

I'm really the only person who would use it, though I guess I could set The Main Squeeze's machine to use it for Time Machine.

Or maybe I should just get myself an independent 4T and be done with it, leaving the 2T for my Time Machine.

Thanks.

Well, that seems to be it. Dismounted itself for the third time, seems to be spinning continuously, and now will not mount.

I guess a trip to the computer store is called for.

I'll disconnect from power now, and reconnect when I have a fresh disk in place. I do have a full offsite backup, which is nice. Of course, whether it will restore is an untested assumption.

Darn. I'll have another check, but I believe all cabling is well away from my extremities.

One of my spinning disks has twice ejected itself -- and kicked up a warning from OSX.

I've checked the cabling and all seems OK.

Should I be worrying?

Yeah, well. Better safe et cetera.

I agree about automatic changing of passwords, and we did talk about that when 1password was active on ADN. Apparently there are reasons, the primary one being that every site's procedures are different.

Thanks.

Next one might be a it of a lecture, and it will be me doing the lecturing.

Thank you. I do worry that it might have been too much.

That's a lot to live up to. Should I be posting more often?
